History: Sherman Opals
1896 - Ernest Gregory (Ernie) Sherman arrived in Australia from
Devon, England.
1896 - Ernie commenced opal mining at White Cliffs, NSW.
1903 - Lightning Ridge discovered.
1908 - Ernie commenced mining and later buying at
Lightning Ridge.
1919 - Ernie made his first journey to Coober Pedy by camel.
1928 - Sherman's sold to the first Japanese customer
and to this day are still supplying the descendants.
1932 - Ernie purchased the first parcel of opal mined at
Andamooka, South Australia.
1946 - Ernest Gregory Sherman (Greg) joined the firm.
1953 - Ernie Sherman passed away.
1970 - Peter Gregory Sherman joined the firm.
1973 - Warwick Gregory Sherman joined the firm.
1986 - Greg Sherman retired.
1996 - E. Gregory Sherman Pty Ltd celebrated their Centenary.
1999 - Warwick Sherman retired.
Peter Sherman purchased his brother's 50% and became sole C.E.O.
2002 - Greg Sherman passed away.
